Nike's Heritage

NIKE, pronounced NI-KEY, is the winged goddess of victory according to Greek mythology. She sat at the side of Zeus, the ruler of the Olympic pantheon, in Olympus. A mystical presence, symbolizing victorious encounters, NIKE presided over history's earliest battlefields. A Greek would say, "When we go to battle and win, we say it is NIKE." Synonymous with honored conquest, NIKE is the twentieth century footwear that lifts the world's greatest athletes to new levels of mastery and achievement. The Swoosh

The SWOOSH logo is a graphic design created by Caroline Davidson in 1971. It represents the wing of the Greek Goddess NIKE. Caroline Davidson was a student at Portland State University in advertising. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes and she started doing some freelance work for his company. Phil Knight asked Caroline to design a logo that could be placed on the side of a shoe. She handed him the SWOOSH, he handed her $35.00. In spring of 1972, the first shoe with the NIKE SWOOSH was introduced.....the rest is history! (from Nike Consumer Affairs packet, 1996)

A brief history of Nike

The Nike athletic machine began as a small distributing outfit located in the trunk of Phil Knight's car. From these rather inauspicious beginnings, Knight's brainchild grew to become the shoe and athletic company that would come to define many aspects of popular culture and myriad varieties of 'cool.'

Nike emanated from two sources: Bill Bowerman's quest for lighter, more durable racing shoes for his Oregon runners, and Knight's search for a way to make a living without having to give up his love of athletics. Bowerman coached track at the University of Oregon where Phil Knight ran in 1959. Bowerman's desire for better quality running shoes clearly influenced Knight in his search for a marketing strategy. Between them, the seed of the most influential sporting company grew.

The story goes like this: while getting his MBA at Stanford in the early '60s, Knight took a class with Frank Shallenberger. The semester-long project was to devise a small business, including a marketing plan. Synthesizing Bowerman's attention to quality running shoes and the burgeoning opinion that high-quality/low cost products could be produced in Japan and shipped to the U.S. for distribution, Knight found his market niche. Shallenberger thought the idea interesting, but certainly no business jackpot. Nothing more became of Knight's project.

Cut to 1963. Phil Knight traveled to Japan on a world-tour, filled with the wanderlust of young men seeking a way to delay the inevitable call of professional life. Seemingly on a whim, Knight scheduled an interview with a Japanese running shoe manufacturer, Tiger--a subsidiary of the Onitsuka Company. Presenting himself as the representative of an American distributor interested in selling Tiger shoes to American runners, Knight told the businessmen of his interest in their product. Blue Ribbon Sports--the name Knight thought of moments after being asked who he represented--was born. The Tiger executives liked what they heard and Knight placed his first order for Tigers soon thereafter.

By 1964, Knight had sold $8,000 worth of Tigers and placed an order for more. Coach Bowerman and Knight worked together, but ended up hiring a full-time salesman, Jeff Johnson. After cresting $1 million in sales and riding the wave of the success, Knight et. al. devised the Nike name and trademark Swoosh in 1971.

By the late '70s, Blue Ribbon Sports officially became Nike and went from $10 million to $270 million in sales. Katz (1994) describes the success via Nike's placement within the matrix of the fitness revolution: 'the idea of exercise and game-playing ceased to be something the average American did for fun,' instead Americans turned to working out as a cultural signifier of status. Clearly, the circumstances surrounding the shift are not this simple; it is one of the aims of this project to discover other generators of popular attention to health.

If Nike didn't start the fitness revolution, Knight says, "We were at least right there. And we sure rode it for one hell of a ride" (Katz, 66). The 80s and 90s would yield greater and greater profits as Nike began to assume the appearance of athletic juggernaut, rather than the underdog of old. "Advertising Age" named Nike the 1996 Marketer of the Year, citing the "ubiquitous swoosh...was more recognized and coveted by consumers than any other sports brand--arguably any brand" (Jensen, 12/96). That same year Nike's revenues were a staggering $6.74 billion. Expecting $8 billion sales in fiscal 1997, Nike has targeted $12 billion in sales by the year 2000.

And all from the back of a car.

Few can question Nike's financial hegemony. But nearly $7 billion in revenues clearly begs the question, What sells these shoes? It is my assertion that Nike's power to sell comes from deep-rooted yearnings for cultural inclusiveness and individual athletic accomplishment. These seemingly paradoxical desires collide in consumers hearts and minds and produce the unyielding zeal for Nike shoes and apparel. Unfortunate effects of this zeal can be found in the rash of Nike apparel killings in 1991 and the profusion of Nike collectors and webpages designed around the company's products. (See listing of homepages on Works Cited Page) Nike appeals to these disparate elements of Americans' personalities through an advertising philosophy that is, at once, simple and sublime. In addition, Nike's practice of top-level athletes promoting their products appeal to countless ages and creeds as a way to identify with and emulate their athletic heroes. These forces work powerfully upon the individual consumer, but one should not lose sight of the cultural context in which the individual moves.

Mesothelioma is one of the deadliest diseases known to man; the average life span of an inflicted person from the time of diagnosis until death is less than 24 months. It’s a disease that strikes approximately 3,000 United States citizens each and every year; hard working people who have labored for a lifetime to provide for their families, doing the work that keeps this country running and a great place to live. I didn't know snapping your finger could get you in the record books. And it did for 48-year-old Bob Hatch. On May 17, 2000, Bob snapped his finger to the point where it reached a 108 on the decibel meter. This give Bob the record title for the loudest finger snap in the world. Introduction

With current fashion in an �80s time machine, trends have a split personality. David Bowie meets Nancy Reagan? The common dominator is looking rich.

Who wants to look like a millionaire? Everyone, if the current fashion trends are any indication. With diamonds a La Liz (Elizabeth Taylor pictured above) and pearls, cashmere and silk, heralding the revival of socialite style, it�s no wonder that hair for the season is more haute than hip. Rife with �80s influence, the looks for today are less complex than Farrah or Cher ever wore, but they�re definitely from the Reagan era. This means you can say goodbye to bedroom hair forever as classic cuts, smoother styles and high-rent color move to the fashion forefront.

However, the �80s were also the era of glam rock and it�s from this zeitgeist that hair gets its playfulness. According to Anthony Chistiano, Mario Tricoci Salons and Spas �Mane� man in Chicago, short cuts are influenced by Pat Benatar�s shorter fringe and disconnected overlay; mid-length looks have that tattered edge of Debbie Harry�s hair in the �80s; longer looks combine face-framing fringes with short crown layers, taking you right into an updated Joan Jett. However, say stylists coast-to-coast, whoever your �80s icon, bring it down a bit: Today�s looks leave out the big-hair aspect of the influence. The hair to wear with the look is long; while it seems we barely escaped to short for a season before the pendulum swung back, most every hairdresser is predicting a new, longer length. 3. Updos and casual looks are lots smoother than before and partly because long hair is back, the neatly combed, low-on-the neck ponytail or the chignon are the styles to wear. Chignons are seen even during daytime, if they are neat and sophisticated, yet simple. Runway models varied the look by wearing side-swept ponytails or braiding them into long plaits, with the complicated fishtail braid looking the most convincingly new. 6. Part of the trend toward healthy hair and lifestyles is the �natural� approach, which this season evolves into a �pure� approach. The difference: Natural products contain nature�s hair helpers, while pure ones also eliminate alcohol and anything else that can harm hair. Pure also increasingly means chemical-free, which puts the perm on the backseat. Curls and waves come from sets or stylists who know how to mold in waves or use the tool the French made famous: The Marcel iron.

7. Texture is always important, but this season, it�s precision razor cutting that adds it best. For short hair, the technique adds instant mobility; for long locks, perimeter edging is more precise than ever. Even highlights are point-cut to show off texture and spiky crowns are new, because they�re lots more subtle than the last time around. The idea is to have subtly controlled texture in the form of cut-in movement, as opposed to helter-skelter styling. Think of waves, curls, spirals and directional cuts that create a personalized image without a lot of work on your part.

8. As baby boomers move into their Dynasty years, it�s only natural that there�s a new emphasis on volume, the attribute women have always wanted most. Not only does it feminize a style, it's a must for hair that's beginning to look thinner. Whether hair is rounded all over or lifted at the top, volume always looks natural and smooth, following the curves of the head. Remember, big hair is not part of the moneyed look, whether it�s �inherited it� or just-out-of-high-school dotcom cash. There are many many myths about hair, and sadly perhaps, even hair stylists who should know better circulate some of this Hair Voodoo. Here are the scientific FACTS about the top 10 hair myths:

1. Cutting your hair makes it stronger or grow faster.

Bull winkle. Its hair, not a lawn. Exactly where this myth started is unknown, but is probably related to the observation of men's facial hair. There are different kinds of hair on your face and head. Hair on your head and facial hair have different properties. Cutting your hair will only make it shorter and hairs grows almost exactly half an inch per month, no matter what you do or take.

2. Split ends can be repaired.

Sorry Charlie, not true. Split ends cannot be repaired and should be cut off immediately or they will split yet higher and do yet more damage.

3. Brushing your hair is good for it.

To the contrary, brushing your hair is very very very bad for your hair and the leading contributor to split ends and hair breakage. By all means groom your hair, but once it is in place, STOP.

4. Tight hats cause baldness.

This one probably started in the military where young men entering the service were required to wear hats and soon showed signs of going bald, or at least of hair thinning. This is due to coincidental timing. The age that young men enter the military is also the same age that male pattern hair loss begins. This is due to dihydrotestosterone, not hats. Hats do cause hair breakage and to a lessor degree to split ends.

5. Hair can turn gray or white over night.

What utter nonsense. This one was born in literature. What part of "fiction" did you not understand? Hair receives its color genetically and can only turn gray or white over very long periods of time. Actually the hair doesn't turn white in as much as the hair loses color, but not over night, or even a wild weekend.

6. Pluck one gray hair and two grow back.

Folks, if this were true I would be pulling my hair out by the fist full. I need more hair and can always color the gray hair.

7. Baldness is inherited from the mothers side of the family.

More Hair Voodoo. Male and female pattern hair loss can be inherited from either side of the family and may or may not skip many generations. Male pattern hair loss usually begins at age 18 to 20 and female patter hair loss between ages 45 and 55.

8. Dandruff is caused by dry scalp.

Dandruff and dry scalp are two entirely different things. A good shampoo and conditioner will take care of the dry scalp, which is 'flaking'. Dandruff shampoos such as "Head and Shoulders' are entirely unnecessary and inadvisable.

Dandruff is a serious health issue and requires medical attention and prescribed medication. The 'flakes' are actually oily, not dry. Very very few people have actual dandruff and you would know it if you did.

9. Dandruff is contagious.

No. You already have the micro organism that causes dandruff, yours just aren't as active. On the other hand, there are plenty of nasty things you can get from someone else's comb or brush, so be careful.

10. Cutting your hair during a full moon makes it grow in healthier, fuller, faster or longer.

Give me a break. I am not even going to dignify this one with an explanation. Hey, if you buy into this type of earth muffin drivel, by all means, mark the dates on your calendar.
